The Nervous System: What's it made of?
Glad you asked... The nervous system is made up of two different sub-categories: the central nervous system (CNS), and the peripheral nervous system (PNS[ha-ha...very funny Mr. Lumby]). The CNS consists of the brain and spine, and the PNS consists of everything outside the CNS.
The Brraaiinnnn!!!
The brain has many functions. Let's face it... it controls everything in the body. Somewhere on this page, you may locate a chart that shows what part of the body some of the parts of the brain controls. Alright, there you go... :-D

The Brain: How the signals and reactions work.
The brain, as we know it, is a very important part of the nervous system. It is made up of many parts that control different parts and functions of the body. The brain sends an electric signal down the spinal cord, which is protected by the vertebrae, and branches out to other parts of the nervous system. A neuron is a single nerve cell. These neurons send this electric impulse to other neurons, though they actually don't touch. Instead, the signal passes right through the synapse, or gap between cells. This information usually ends up as a reflex. This signal, however, can go both ways. For example, if you were to put your finger on or over something hot, this would be sensed, and a signal would be sent upward the spine towards the brain. The brain would then either confirm the information, or discard it. Either way, the brain will remember the response for a possible future encounter to the same circumstances. Then, the signal will be sent back to the correct muscle groups in order to react to the temperature of the object.

5 New Pieces of "Info" (your favorite word in the world)
1. There are 3 different types of neurons: sensory, motor, and inter-neurons.
2.There are many different types of disorders that may occur to the nervous system, such as: meningitis, neuritis, etc. These are all abnormalities that happen when something unusual has affected the cells.
3. The average person has 100 billion neurons in their brain.
4. During brain surgery, the patient is awake, so that the surgeon knows they are being correct and not impairing the wrong functions.
5. Neurons can transmit impulses as fast as 100 meters per second.

ReplyDeleteThis is really cool. Thanks for your help with the project that I'm working on.
ReplyDeletehaha cool i copied one of your pictures to use for my project :)
ReplyDeletenice picture, thanks a lot, I have a science project on the nervous system, and this picture did a lot to help it! Thanks for devoting your time in doing everyone a favor.
